Upcoming movies in 2014: What remains?

Upcoming movies in 2014Yes, I know that the summer is half over, but there are still a few good movies coming out over the course of the rest of the year and these are the ones I’m looking forward to:

Upcoming movies in 2014: Lucy, release date: July 25th, director: Luc Besson

You probably best know this guy from his work on the Fifth Element. One of my favorite movies and that movie too had a strong female protagonist. Paul says this is the pretty much the Black Widow movie that Marvel Studios isn’t creating…yet. From the trailers alone, I’m intrigued by the idea of a person being able to manipulate matter and learn languages in hours. Of course, the whole premise that we don’t use all of our brain is false. Nature doesn’t create anything that isn’t efficiently using all available parts. Nonetheless, the idea that a person could become superhuman is intriguing.

Upcoming movies in 2014: Hercules, release date: July 25th, director: Brett Ratner.

From the guy who brought you the third X-Men movie and Tower Heist, OK, and Rush Hour which wasn’t a bad buddy cop movie.  Still his directing credits aren’t what makes me want to go see this movie. It’s the Rock and the Greek mythology, Who doesn’t enjoy a good hero quest story?

Upcoming movies in 2014: Guardians of the Galaxy, release date August 1st, director: James Gunn.

Admittedly, I’m a big fan of what Marvel Studios has been doing. From Iron Man through the latest installment of Captain America (and even Agents of S.H.E.I.L.D.), I love the way the movies are episodic, but also connected. I’m not even a comic book reader, but the stories are just that good.

According to what I’ve read at IMDB, Guardians of the Galaxy is James Gunn’s first full length movie directing effort.  He wrote it too, so he has quite a bit of energy invested into it.

Upcoming movies in 2014: Get on Up, release date August 1st, director Tate Taylor

A biopic about James Brown better have good music bits in it to say the least. Tate Taylor directed the Help, which was an amazing movie, so I’m hoping this one is just as good. With a topic like the life of James Brown, it has to be entertaining. His influence on music spans decades. Even today, the kids should be listening to his music as a lesson in how music has evolved.

Upcoming movies in 2014: Dumb and Dumber To

Has it really been 20 years since the first Dumb and Dumber came out? Yikes. While I couldn’t get through the pre-quel, I’m hoping the sequel brings back some of the old ridiculousness. I might be older, but my sense of humor is intact. Just the other day, Paul was quoting this movie and every time I see Samsonite, I think of Lloyd trying to remember Mary’s last name. Also, I’m trying not to cringe at the preposition at the end of the title of this movie.

Movies I’m not interested in:

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: I shun all things Michael Bay, plus TMNT was a little past my time. I was a teenager when the cartoons came out, so I don’t have that sense of nostalgia drawing me to see this movie.

What movies are on your radar?
