>OK, I’ve been asking this question for the past 10 years and Chris Colin over at the SFGate has answered it. Who the hell are all these people not working when I briefly dash to the store in the middle of the day? My office, nay my building, is full of people at work from 8ish to 5ish.
I think there are a lot of people taking the day off “to be with their dogs” if you ask me. Although if you are an independent contractor or own your own business, you pretty much make your own hours, so I guess there could be a few of those people wandering around during the daylight hours.
Can you imagine BOREDOM being the motivation for getting a job? Me neither.
I’d be curious to see if the same result is found in the ‘burbs.
>I’m not supposed to say anything but everyone walking around is actually working. We’re just like the seat fillers at the Academy Awards. Those guys are really good. My current route is the local parks which is nice. You usually start out riding a bus all day or walking along the freeway holding a red can. After the summer I lose the park dog and I’m being assigned a “wife” at the mall which will make conversations much easier.
>I didn’t take off yesterday because I wanted to “be with my dog” as much as I wanted to drink. So I went to the bar, fired up Thorogood’s “I drink alone” on the juke box and went at it. At some point I ended up bowling and then later recording some movie on the Spanish playboy channel. So all in all, I’d say it was a pretty successful day.
>I spend the day wandering around looking for good places to eat.
