He doesn’t really look like Tom Cruise, but then again I don’t look much like my sister. We sound exactly the same on the phone, but she’s a tanned brunette and I’m a pale blonde. If you saw a picture of me, you would never guess I have Spanish in my blood. I look more like my mom’s side of the family: German, German, and Swiss (German).
I’m getting off on a tagent here, but I unknowingly pulled a “Donna Chang” at my temp job. They told me one of the reasons they were so eager to meet me was because they thought I could communicate with Spanish speaking people.
I wonder how many people see the Hispanic last name on my resume and think, “She must be Mexican.” Uh, I don’t speak Spanish and I’m not Mexican looking at all.
Companies assume my family speaks Spanish all the time. I can’t tell you how many coupons and advertisements we’ve received in Spanish over the years. In fact, just last week, my parents got some sort of loan notice and the whole letter was in Spanish. No idea what it says.
