Mundane Habits: Greeting Card Display

Last weekend, it was my birthday, hence, I was given a few cards.  Even in this digital age, I still love getting paper cards.  See them displayed? How long do you typically keep them around?  I don’t really have a set in stone time limit.  It can be anywhere from a week to a month, depending on how distracted I am at that point in my life.

It reminds me of a moment in a Seinfeld episode, Jerry’s girlfriend sends him a thank you card (or something) and after he reads it, immediately trashes it. His excuse is that he doesn’t have a mantel.

I haven’t had a mantel in at least 10 years and yet, I still find some place to display greeting cards and Christmas stockings for that matter.

The greeting card thing is one of those unwritten rules. No one really tells you what is socially acceptable, you just pretty much do what you’ve seen in your family.  My mom would display (and still does) the greeting cards she gets.  I don’t know for how long, but definitely at least a week. She doesn’t have a mantel.  She has a piano.  I don’t have a mantel (don’t really want one because I don’t want to clean out a fire place), but Paul found this shelf which I think works well.
